This is a painting by an artist called Kevin Stevenson. I hadn't seen this painting before and thought that i would chose it as it stirs up new emotion, rather than chosing a picture from memory.
I chose this pictutre because to me it symbolises love, a mother's love for her children and the unconditional love of a parent.
I feel that Stevenson has acheived his goal in evoaking feelings of love and warmth within this picture in a number of ways.

The primary focus seems to be the mother as she is depicted as a strong figure, in stature and without husband/ man. He has also used very wram, welcoming colours which i think also reinforce this feeling.

I came across this on you tube and i thought it was funny. It also kind of ties in with my 2nd ident project. I couldn't quite identify why thought it was funny until i realised it was probably the crossing of cultures. I thought about that aspect and questioned why, as it seems that we are all victim to stereotyping in some form.... I questioned myself,

Similarly to the av for my 'Happy World' i went about looking for imagery which reflectled the grim reality of the 'Real World' the world in which we live. I decided to use some of the imagery which i had already found, Golliwogs, and slavery being the main imagery. I decided that i did not want to dress it up in any way or make less intimidating, as it is what it is.

In my 3D Max avatar environment i wanted to include av, as i think that this is the pathway i shall be choosing. AVATAR TRIAL AND IMPROVEMENT!!

I decided that out of all the ideas that i had come up with, i like the idea of my avatar being a queen.... maybe a modern day Queen Nanny?...

So i decided to work with that idea, and try to improve it, by making it look more like an actual 'queen'...

I wasn't really keen on how the avatar looked, and experimented by 'trying' to make it look more like myself.... by giving it clothes that i would wear.

However, after experimenting with that idea, i found that that wasn't really working either, and much preferred my avatar not to have a body at all.

So i went to drawing a queens head, but was disappointed and frustrated with my poor drawing skills, so i decided to make the face as simplistic as possible, bearing some kind of likeness to myself!...

I felt that this was the most successful avatar and wanted to stick with this one!!

Initially i was to take my own photograph that 'screamed colour and light' but then came across this picture which i think fits the criteria. Although the picture is taken at night, i do think that it screams colour and light as the glow of the firework illuminates the scene completely. i feel the fact that its night time enhances the contrast of the vibrant colourful fireworks. The picture is also illuminated by the reflection of the bold red fireworks in the water. In my opinon, the reflection on the water enhances the glare of the fireworks- brightening the picture even more.

I have thought about the reasoning behind other key factors which i think should be taken into consideration when constructing my avatar.

My Horrendously loud laugh

From my much earlier years I adopted an uncontrollably loud laugh. Which nobody could stand!! In particular my Grandmother, who was disturbingly irritated by it- maybe because it was similar to her own!!.. Anyway, whenever I would laugh she would say that I “laugh like a dyam rowdy!”

‘Dyam’ is not a spelling error ( she was born in Jamaica, and that is how she pronounces ‘damn’) As a consequence to this I adopted the name ‘LAUGH ROWDY!’

My Childish Behaviour/Nature

Like my father, i have a very childlike nature at times. I love to play practical jokes on people. Taking things to make people think that they are going mad, and replacing it secretly, and hiding behind doors, and other such objects and jumping out at people shouting ‘RAAAAAAAAH!!!!’ in a loud voice is quite entertaining, and are two of my favourites!... very immature, I know.

But it is a big part of my personality, and should be taken into consideration when constructing my avatar.

Fashion & Style!... Or lack of?..

I would not say that was ‘fashionable’ at all really. I wear what I ‘think’ looks good, and what is comfortable. I love anything BRIGHT COLOURED!!!! Which means sometimes I clash!.. but I like it! Hot pink and yellow particularly! I also find Nike trainers irresistible!! I just think that my loud personality seems to seep it’s way into my wardrobe maybe?... so this should also be considered when creating my avatar I think!!

Being Black British

This is an important one! As I talked about my ancestry before, although I hold a lot if it in my heart, I am living in England!!! So there is an amalgamation of cultures and identity within me. This is sometimes good, and sometimes bad. Like eating plantain and breadfruit- with ketchup! (good thing) However there are a lot of negatives as well. Although born in England, there has never really been a sense of this being ‘home’, not like Jamaica- Africa would probably feel even better but I have not yet had the opportunity to go there.

I feel that it would be hard to capture the fantasy element of my child hood, but would love to expreiment with it for the environment of my avatar. I intend to look futher into the work of artist Slavador Dali, and surrealism, i feel that his paintings in some convey the surrealism of childhood/ and dreams that i have- i sleep alot and feel that my dreams have meanings. Thinking about fantasy, i feel that this Micheal Jackson video is fantastic and is my favorite of all time!!...

So after my intensive brainstorm i worked with and a few ideas and gathered my thoughts and explanations of why i decided i might want to take these ideas further...

My ancestry

I wanted my ancestry to be part of my Avatar as it is an integral part of my identity. My family are originally from Jamaica, and my earlier ancestors (my great grand mother’s generation) were maroons (a selection of Jamaicans that rebelled against their slave masters, and ran away from plantations to start new lives in small villages away from the community). My family originate from Clarendon, which s said to be the ‘spiritual’ part of Jamaica. I feel that I have inherited their rebellious nature, and also their spirituality. This is why I feel that my ancestry is an extremely important aspect of my identity, and is something that I value very much.

A leader of one maroon village was Queen Nanny (pitured above), who to me is the epitome of a strong black woman, which in essence is how I view myself. Which i guess sort of ties in with me being strong and independent...?

Slavery is also a big part of my ancestry/identity. The film ROOTS, is an iconic film based on the side of black history which seems to be 'conveniently forgotten' by the media. This film cannot help but evoke emotion, from anybody that watches it, including myself…..

i-Denties!!!

When I first discovered that the next two terms were based on identity, I was somewhat excited. Mainly because I find the topic interesting, as it encourages you to look at yourself from a perspective that you would not normally.

I found the concept of creating an avatar also quite exciting- NOT THE ASPECT OF USING 3D STUDIO MAX THOUGH!... as on first glance it didn’t really look that friendly. I do not have any experience in such software so was somewhat apprehensive.

I got into trying to visualise what my avatar would look like straight away. Although the avatar did not have to assume human form, I wanted mine to.

Getting across my identity in my avatar I found taxing so decided to draw up a quick brainstorm of things/object/people/places etc that I thought represented my ‘identity’ in a bid to try to represent them within my avatar.

I found from constructing my brainstorm that a lot of aspects associated with my identity were associated with my appearance and the fact that I was black. I presumed that this was because this is the most ‘apparent’ aspect of my physical appearance, as I did try to look at myself in third person. I felt that a lot of my personality is also based upon this factor and felt that this is definitely something I must incorporate, represent or symbolise within my avatar.

From my brainstorm I highlighted the some aspects of my identity which I thought I might like to work with representing through my avatar. These were-

As I had been absent from University for a while Roma gave me an independent brief of which I had to complete within the time I was away from uni, there was a little confusion in regards to what exactly I was supposed to produce in the weeks I was away. I had referred to the original brief and assumed that I was to produce a film, however I was not, I was to produce another pixilation film, which I felt much more at ease about as I had some qualms about producing a film by myself as I didn’t think that I would be able to manage the equipment by myself. E.g. sound equipment, camera equipment as well making sure that the shots were well composed.

However after discovering that I would be another pixilation film, I felt very much more at ease. I decided that I would base it something obscure and abstract but also something I felt very passionate about and would be able to deliver in away that would reflect my personality. I also had to take into consideration the constraints of the brief I had been given by Roma which was basically to produce a pixilation film concentrating on; depth of field, style of shot and composition. I decided to base my pixilation project on Nike trainers- which I adore!! (as I said previously) I had already decided that I wanted the film to project my loud personality and wanted to concentrate on the film being bright, vibrant, funky and visually stimulating in the style of an Nike advert.

PIXILATION- Project One

For this project i was in a team of four. This project was basically exploring moving image through pixilation. Our Seminar focused on an example of a pixilation film by The Quay Brothers. As we had not participated in a pixilation project before this was very new to everybody in our team. This created a new learning experience for everybody where creative ideas were being bounced off each other, however it was very difficult to formulate ideas that we could make work as this was so new to us. To get inspiration we had looked on youtube at different examples of pixilation films that gave us some inspiration. We then went about making our pixilation film. We decided that we would each take it in turns to be behind and in front of the camera. As this would make it fair and the work load evenly spread between us. We had no storyboard or a structured plan as we didn’t have much time so we decided to just work with our environment. The film didn’t look as good as i had hoped it would, but after batch processing the photographs we had taken, in Adobe Photoshop CS3 the final product was slightly better.

I have not used Adobe Première Pro before, (only Final Cut) and so was unable to edit the film as quickly as i would have liked as I had not yet had my tutorial demonstrating the basics. I'm quite unimpressed with the final product and intend to do a better version at some stage.

· A distinguished design problem or flaw- this is normally what a brief is based upon (solving a design fault or producing a product to solve a design flaw)

· Analyse the solution by listing as many questions as possible about the product i.e. What is it made of? How safe is it?

· Research- undergo market research to address what your target audience/ client expects from product i.e. questionnaires, focus groups etc

· Research-Undergo product research on existing products

· Research- undergo research into what materials/equipment/ software will be used to produce product

For some unknown reason i love Nike trainers, most particularly Nike Air Forces. So i decided to base my second pixillation project on Nike trainers. I want my pixillation project to be modern, bright, vibrant, creative and funky!

I intend to experiment with different coloured laces, wire, back drops etc. Essentially i want to concentrate on bright visuals, details and colours of the trainers also experimenting with the depth of field, composition, and the angle of the shots.

Second Narratives Project

After having a long and informative conversation with Roma today about my set brief for my second narratives project, everything seems a lot easier than I had first anticipated.

I was under the impression that i had to produce a film and was some what- shall we say 'worried' about producing this film. However Roma advised me that in actual fact i am not producing a film, i am undergoing another pixillation project. I wasn't aware of that as i had been emailing Deborah about making 'the film' and wasn't advised that i wasn't supposed to be making one!!

So anyways.... now i've adjusted comfortably back into my comfort zone, my creative cogs are turning...

I decided for this new pixillation project I’m going to smother it completely in my personality so it just exudes creativity. I have a vivid picture in my head of how I would like my pixilation project to turn out, but I intend to be very experimental and open minded. After much thought and deliberation I have decided to base my project on something i feel very passionately about…..

These past few weeks have been so irritating for me. Due to circumstances beyond my control i've been unable to attend uni for a little while. So basically i've been given a brief to do which... isn't particularly hard but when you are in an uninspiring environment can be quite irritating to generate wonderful creative crazy ideas!!! Which usually i'm quite good at doing, HOWEVER- my thought process seems to really be really taking its time to function. Creativity is my second nature and i love having the freedom to generate ideas without any limits or boundaries but in this instance things are not goin as i want them to.

My main concerns are that i have to generate this short film within a weeks time. Coming from a media production background normally i would be quite excited about that prospect, but considering that i'm going to be working completely alone is a tad bit worrying and some what baffling!!.... I'm quite used to working in a production team, and normally take on director/ director of photography and styling duties within a production team. So i am considerably out of my confort zone on this one.

Also the fact that the brief is so open leaves so many difefrent avenues to explore- and lots and lots of pages of brainstorms! Another aspect of concern for me is actors!!!.... I DON'T HAVE ANY!

I'm a person that likes to plan, and after discussing this concern with Deborah and concluding that actually, i won't be having any actors, again brought me very much out of my comfort zone.

So essentially, i have equipment, no cast, no crew, no fellow students to bounce creative iedas off!...

Although i feel apprehensive, i'm excited and am going to try to enjoy and learn as much possible from this experience.

Over the weekend i indulged in a few of my fav mags to give me some creative inspiration as to what to do for my second narrative project....

I kinda want it to reflect my outgoing, quriky, funky upbeat personality i've got a few ideas cartwheeling around in my head, nothin stable yet though so i'll probably have a play around....

WHITE BAORD ANIMATION!!

All the white board animations have strung together to make one long animation which has now been uploaded onto youtube which is pretty cool. So, i thought i'd put it on here feel free to comment... The basic rules of the animation was that we worked in groups of 4 and had to start off with a box on the left hand side of a tree which had to end up on the right hand side. We all had to take it in turns drawing on the white board and also taking the photographs. My groups animation starts at 1 minute 51 seconds. The hardest part of the task was not to get too hung up the artistic quality of the animation, as its suposed to be something pretty fluid and quick!!!.....

Well, i've recently started uni at NTU after successfully finishing my courses at college. I'm doing a Multimedia course which looks like its goin to be pretty cool. At the moment we are just experiementing with image making and stuff. We had had two pretty cool projects, whiteboard animation and pinhole camera excerises.
I think i'm really going to enjoy my time here at NTU, my main objectives are to master the the different disciplines within multimedia & to gain some useful industry contacts!!
