Representations

It is noticable that most representations of black people are negative ones. I decided to read a book to gain a wider knowledge of sociology and other such issues in Brtiain to help me with this project.

I went to Waterstones and brought a book called 'There Ain't No Black In The Union Jack'

by Gilroy. I have just started the book but so far so good.

People feel very uncomfortable talking about the past, in terms of the slave trade. So i have decided that i want my avatar environment to be considerably 'uncomfortable'

I decided that i wanted to represent how i felt living in England, and how english people felt about black people living in england... so i looked for relevant imagery from past and present. Although it is the general assumption that england isn't 'racist' anymore i srongly disagree. I just feel that it has been disguised better.

My cousin (Meegan) is part of a dance group called Looney Teens. Shes pretty good. I always try go to her competitions to support her and give her some support. This was one of her most recent competitions that she took part in as part of Raw Talent, which she won!!!...

second life

i have entered second life for the 1st time and it is the most boring thing i have encountered so far. I do not like second life and do not really see the point of it, apart from ‘interacting’ with other people which you can online anyway, without the horrible desolate environment.

I have considered my Avatar environment quite considerably and wanted something quite obscure, abstract and surreal which would reflect my personality.

Second life!

I HAVE SET UP MY SECOND LIFE LIFE AVATAR THERE WAS NOT MUCH CHOICE, ONLY 6. 3 MALE, 3 FEMALE. I CHOSE THE GOTHIC LOOKING FEMALE AS MY AVATAR. I HAVE YET TO ACTUALLY 'ENTER' SECOND LIFE THOUGH.

THE FLOATING HEAD !!!

I DECIDED THAT I WILL HAVE A 'FLOATING HEAD' AS MY AVATAR. THE HEAD WILL BE WEARING A CROWN AND HOPEFULLY RESEMBLE ME SOMEWHAT.

THE HEAD= KNOWLEDGE!

AFTER TRYING ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS TO PRODUCE A 'BODY' FOR MY AVATAR I CAME TO THE DECESION THAT ACTUALLY MY AVATAR DOES NOT NEED ONE. I FOUND IT HARD NOT TO DRAW A BODY THAT REPRESENTED ME. IT WAS EITHER TO FEMININE, OR TOO MASULINE, BOTH OF THESE REPRESENTATIONS NOT FITTING MY PERSONALITY OR WHAT I WAS TRYING TO PORTRAY OF MYSELF. SO AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION I DECIDED THAT ACTUALLY.. I DO NOT NEED A 'BODY'

I AM A FLOATING HEAD!!.. WHICH REPRESENTS MY CRAVING OF KNOWLEDGE. THIS KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT APPLY TO 'GENERAL KNOWLEDGE' BUT TO THE 'KNOWLEDGE' OF SUCH THINGS AS METAPHYSICS, OF WHICH I AM SOME WHAT FASCINATED BY. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A BIG PART OF MY IDENTITY, AS I AM VERY 'SPRITUAL'.

WHATS WORKING AND WHATS NOT..

WELL WHATS WORKING- EVERYTHING APART FROM THE BODY!!! IS THE BODY OF MY AVATAR THAT NESSECARY? HMM... I DON'T tHINK SO. WHENEVER I TRY TO REPRESENT MY PERSONALTY THROUGH MY AVATAR BODY IT SEEMS TO COME ACROSS EVER SO 'MASCULINE'. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER THATS BECAUSE OF MY 'ASSERTIVE' PERSONALITY. BUT OFTEN BLACK WOMEN ARE GENERALISED AS BEING AGGRESSIVE.I DON'T FEEL THAT THERE IS ANYTHING 'WRONG' WITH MY ASSERTIVE PERSONALITY BUT REPRESENTING IT IS HARD- NOT A MAN!!!.... .

AVATAR TRIAL AND IMPROVEMENT!!

I decided that out of all the ideas that i had come up with, i like the idea of my avatar being a queen.... maybe a modern day Queen Nanny?...

So i decided to work with that idea, and try to improve it, by making it look more like an actual 'queen'...

I wasn't really keen on how the avatar looked, and experimented by 'trying' to make it look more like myself.... by giving it clothes that i would wear.

However, after experimenting with that idea, i found that that wasn't really working either, and much preferred my avatar not to have a body at all.

So i went to drawing a queens head, but was disappointed and frustrated with my poor drawing skills, so i decided to make the face as simplistic as possible, bearing some kind of likeness to myself!...

I felt that this was the most successful avatar and wanted to stick with this one!!
